What is a Community Foundation?
A tax-exempt, not-for-profit, philanthropic institution,
supported by donations from individuals, corporations
and private foundations.
Community foundations form partnerships with donors
who can make one gift that supports numerous diverse
organizations meeting long-term community goals (i.e.
HIV/AIDS, gay youth)
A volunteer board of directors
knowledgeable about the community it serves governs a
community foundation.

the community.

Why Do We Need a Lesbian and Gay Community Foundation?
Mainstream foundations give less than 1% of their total
giving collectively to LGBT issues. We focus exclusively
on these issues.
Because Stonewall offers an awareness and sensitivity
to community issues that most mainstream philanthropic
organizations lack.
Because we need a permanent resource that can respond
to the evolving needs of the community.

I already donate to a number of community organizations.
Why should I give to Stonewall?
Your gift supports Stonewall’s mission to strengthen the entire lesbian
and gay community.
Stonewall provides grants to community groups that many donors don’t
even know exist.
Stonewall grants are different than the financial support
organizations receive from other donations because they
target infrastructure development that will help them
become more self-sustaining.
Stonewall is one of the few funders providing seed money
for new and emerging organizations meeting critical needs
in our community.

How does Stonewall make its grants?
Grants are determined by an independent Grant Advisory
Committee comprised of community representatives and

and advocacy organizations.
