Amida Care & Stonewall

A strategic partnership keeping our people healthy and safe

Amida Care and Stonewall staffers alongside representatives from critical HIV services organizations

Over the course of the last few years, the world has been dealing and living with various new and reemerging pandemics: COVID-19, MPox, RSV, and the list goes on. At Stonewall, however, we’re also working to fight the decades-old pandemic that has cost more than 40 million lives since it surfaced: HIV.

Stonewall Community Foundation’s very existence is rooted in the darkest days of the HIV crisis: our earliest leaders came together to fight the disease with funds donated and bequeathed from those who had tragically lost their own battles. Ending HIV and supporting long term survivors and others living with this virus is in Stonewall’s very DNA, and in partnership with Amida Care, we have been supporting organizations on the front lines of this fight.

Since 2015, the Amida Care Fund at Stonewall has made over $140,000 in grants to prevention and intervention strategies that engage members of the LGBTQ community in NYC who are most at risk for HIV infection, or who are HIV+ but not virally suppressed or receiving necessary care. Amida Care Fund grantees reach people of color, TGNCNB people, sex workers, youth, and other vulnerable groups through their innovative, community-based programs. In 2021, awardees included Brooklyn Community Pride Center, the NEW Pride Agenda, Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo, Translatinx Network, and Trinity Place Shelter. We’re grateful to Amida Care and Doug Wirth, its president and CEO, for their ongoing commitment and support of this program.

Additionally, between the start of the COVID pandemic and October 2022, Stonewall’s own discretionary grantmaking and fund partners made over $217,000 through 40 grants to more than a dozen organizations focused on direct HIV service provision and advocacy around the country. We can’t even begin to estimate the impact that we make through grants made to arts, education, and other non-HIV focused organizations that count people living with HIV among their clients.

Stonewall Community Foundation makes this pledge to our communities: until HIV is over for all of us, it isn’t over for ANY of us.

Stonewall funds critical work that advances our dream of collective liberation and improves the everyday lives of LGBTQ people. Your gift plays a definitive role in making progress possible.
