Scholarship, style, and social justice
For the third year in a row, we partnered with Aritzia, a fashion retailer with an innovative global platform, on the Aritzia Scholarship at Stonewall. The Aritzia Scholarship supports LGBTQIA students who study, plan to work in, or have demonstrated a commitment to the fields of fashion design, retail management, mental health, or social justice advocacy. Each year, we receive hundreds of applications from brilliant students across the United States, and this year was no exception. In fact, we received a record 200+ applications!
After reviewing hundreds of applications from passionate and talented students, our selection committee made some difficult decisions. We’re thrilled to have awarded the 2024 Aritzia Scholarship to four students:
Sydnee Eubanks, an undergraduate studying fashion merchandising with a passion for supporting underrepresented communities within the fashion industry;
tq, an undergraduate math major who wants to make STEM more accessible to queer people and other marginalized communities;
Mary Owen, a graduate student studying epidemiology and global health and working to dismantle the structural barriers LGBTQ people face in healthcare; and
Joshua Kim, a medical student with a focus on addressing LGBTQ health disparities.
Here’s what some of this year’s scholars had to say about the impact of receiving this scholarship:
"Receiving the Stonewall Aritzia Scholarship has been transformative, enabling me to fully focus on my studies without the financial burden. In my upcoming year of study, I am most looking forward to diving into my thesis research on Black maternal health in the United States. Beyond this, I hope to make a lasting impact in the field of public health for racial, sexual, and gender minorities in the years to come, and I will always be grateful to the Stonewall scholar community for their support as I work towards this goal.” -- Mary Owen
"The Aritzia scholarship is allowing me to do a semester abroad in Italy where I'll be studying fashion, art, and design. This is an incredible opportunity for me to develop my talents and pursue my goals of becoming a leader in the fashion industry who cultivates a space for others like me. I'm eternally grateful to Aritzia and Stonewall Community Foundation for making this journey possible." -- Sydnee Eubanks
“I am beyond grateful for Stonewall Community Foundation and Aritzia for seeing me and investing in my journey toward becoming a physician. This scholarship will serve to reduce the number of hours that I will need to work to support myself and instead allow me to focus more time on championing this pathway to elevate the voices of the LGBTQ community and other vulnerable groups.” -- Joshua Kim
We’re honored to support their studies and we’re proud to welcome them to the ranks of Stonewall scholars.
